You may have one or two forklift trucks, or you could operate an entire fleet. Either way it’s not always easy to determine when you should replace a forklift. There’s a number of factors that affect how long they can last, and we wanted to go through some of the key ones that you should be aware of.
Harsh working environments
If you often operate your trucks in particularly harsh environments then this can have a negative affect on their lifespan. Constant exposure to extreme heat, cold, dusty or damp environments can all shorten their longevity. If a forklift is constantly being used in harsh conditions each day, you will need to take steps to ensure you only use it within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
Tell-tale signs of failure
It’s important that your operators know what to watch out for when it comes to spotting the signs of forklift truck failure. These signs can include; wiring which has become exposed overtime, distorted parts and worn out fork blades, cracks on the truck, and poor levels of performance during daily tasks. Brief your operators on these signs and ensure they remain vigilant.
Regular, routine maintenance
If you don’t have a maintenance schedule that is adhered to rigorously, then minor issues with your forklifts can soon spiral into major problems. Booking regular servicing can help but so can having your operators conduct regular servicing checks on your trucks. As well as carrying out cursory checks before each shift.
Once you have a routine in place to check things like fluid levels, as well as wear and tear on tires and belts etc, major problems can be spotted in good time. Of course, sometimes it can be more cost-effective to purchase a new forklift as opposed to continuously repairing an ageing one.
Make sure you ask after these maintenance details when purchasing a used forklift too, as poorly maintained trucks can lead to many hidden costs in the future, as well as an increased risk of accidents.
This is why, at H&F Lift Trucks, we source the right second hand equipment for your needs. Our experience means that we can review your requirements and determine the best and most suitable truck within your budget.
